A Transitioning Style

Through the years I have noticed my style change drastically. I started out with a very boho/rocker vibe, well as much as you can at 14. I wore lots of flowy skirts, cardigans, and fingerless gloves whilst also proclaiming my music superiority through band t-shirts. Having grown up in a suburban town, this was my "F*** you!" to conformity.
Later into my teens I transitioned into a more vintage inspired, sweet, preppy and girly style. This still has influence on my style today, but toned down so I don't look like a kid. I started gravitating towards clothing that accentuated my waist, and collard shirts became a staple in my wardrobe. I phased out the fingerless gloves and added florals. My great love  was, and still is, oxfords. When i'd grow out of one pair I'd need another, I wore those and combat boots most of the time. I always chose brown over black, and minimalism wasn't even a thought in my head as I always gravitated towards bright colours and floral patterns.
It wasn't until this fashioned obsessed small town girl moved to Toronto for school that I got an awakening of sorts. The best dressed of the small town was down right dowdy compared to the girls in Toronto. I tried my hardest to fit in at first, wearing more black, less florals and lamenting over my lack of black boots. I soon grew to realize that I was losing who I was, and I was trying so hard to fit in that I was losing the individuality that I was always proud of.
Since then i've tried to find a balance, not completely getting rid of florals, however not dressing to cutesy. I've now incorporated ideas of minimalism into my wardrobe, I like the simplicity and elegance it offers to my style and find its has helped my wardrobe become more grown up. In addition to minimalism i've become more interested in menswear inspired clothing. I find that the clothes suit my body type as well as add a dose of professionalism and a vintage nod.

All together i've gone through quite the fashion journey, but I still have a little bit of each phase with me. I still love my flowy cardigans and skirts, and my feminine vintage inspired clothes. Although it has only been around five years that this has happened through, they were a turbulent five. From here and going forward likely my style will still change, but I hope that i'll not lose myself trying to fit in too much.
